Erlend Klette is a charming boy living on the west coast of Norway, a city by the name Bergen. He is a well known DJ and he could be one of the most active DJs in bergen right now. He throws some really cool parties, just to mention some; Blitzkrig, FRUKT, Klubb Klubb & KLETTExOPITZ. He has some sort of degree in theater and has a day job at the music organization Brak. We are not stopping there, he also assists Admir Kenan on running the record label Maksimal, manages a disco band called B0KA, works with PR on a new festival called “Vill Vill Vest”, I think that is like a miniature version of SXSW i Bergen. Rumors also has it that he has finished a track that is soon to be released. And this morning he took some time of whatever he was suppose to do to have a chat with us, and we forced him to bring a mixtape since we always have that 😀
(we turned the mixtape on, so you can scroll down to the bottom and listen to it while reading. If you can manage to do both; listen and read)
How would you describe the music we have been listening to?
Latin jazz pop meets jazz rock. Hey, I dunno. Just some cool tracks.
Is this a recording from a previous gig?
It could be, but it’s not. I made this specially for you!
What is your function at Brak?
I’m 40% employed, it’s kinda like an internship. Well, it basically is, I just don’t like that word – so I avoid it. But I’m quite sure whoever’s reading this don’t have a clue what Brak is, and also can’t be bothered to google it. So allow me! Brak is a NGO/NON-profit (I recommend you google this, if you don’t know – since kind of good to know) – and it helps musicians/promoters/music-industry-strivers/etc free of charge. My job is to do interviews and general social media stuff. I also make coffee and do the dishes, sometimes – it’s not my job, it just like being nice.
Can you tell us a bit more about Vill Vill Vest? Are you going to play there?
This interview is turning into some kinda pitch, or it has sort of a job-application-wibe! Anyways, I’d love to talk about Vill Vill Vest, or Wild Wild West (rights reserved). It’s a brand new showcase festival in Bergen, in september. 9 venues, 40 acts, 2 days. All booked acts have to go through a jury. 605 bands/musicians applied to play this year, so we’re very excited to see which 40 the jury will pick! I’m not playing on the festival – I work with with social media promotion for the festival.
Is there any other clubs and bars you would recommend checking out in Bergen?
I’d kinda only recommend two places if you wanna club, Landmark and Østre (unless you like hiphop – then I’d try my luck at Klubb Kok). Actually KoNo 16 also has some cool techno nights, but it’s just a small cosy bar. You know what, Café Opera also could be pretty fun on Fridays. But Landmark and Østre are the big club venues on Saturday – and they’re actually quite unique in a national or even a global sense (as far as I’m concerned). They’re both culture houses out for rent, so they don’t throw their own events. There’s always a external promotor coming in with the concept and line-up! Which makes them quite agile, I think. Bars: Legal, Muskedunder, Ujevnt.
And as I mentioned in my intro. I have heard that you are about to release your own track. Is this true and is it in your mixtape?
It’s true! No, it’s not in this mix – It does quite fit in this mix. The track is currently being being mixed by someone whom I very much admire and like, as a producer. So I’m very stoked about that, but I’m not gonna go into any further detail on the track. Just wait and see/hear! This mix does however include an edit I did.
What do you think is important if people want to get where you have reached today?
I can’t see any reason why people would want to get where “I’ve reached”! I mean, it’s not like I’m an acclaimed-anything or something – I’m just doing what seems fun. I have a bachelor in theatre science – and for a long time, all I wanted to do was theatre. Then I started to work at some festivals, got involved in the Bergen club scene and started to DJ. I always recommend friends to be ambitious in their pursuit of happiness, and not to focus too much on career stuff – do what’s fun! My point is – to try and answer your question – don’t reach anything else than happiness. Budda be blessed!
Is there any DJs you would recommend our readers to check out?
Any DJ whatsoever? Well my all time favorites are DJ Harvey, Hunee, Young Marco and Baris K. In Bergen I’d check out Emilio Sanhueza if he’s playing – he’s always very eclectic and sometimes straight out humours with his sets! For some really good and interesting 4/4, I’d check out Simon Opitz! Actually my new favorite Bergen-based DJ is Sondre Thorbjørnsen (En Vanlig Fyr), his name probably won’t ring any bells for anyone – but he has an insane selection of tracks. He’s really a DJ of my caliber, full of oriental disco tracks and weird african dance pearls! I’m predicting a bright future for him!
